Telenor's Nordics service revenue grew 4% and EBITDA by 8% in the quarter. Similarly, it expects EBITDA to grow by 3-4% this year, which earlier was also seen at "low-to-mid single-digit growth". Telenor reiterated it expects capital expenditure in the Nordics to be around 17% of revenues for the period. OSLO, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Norwegian telecoms operator Telenor (TEL.OL) hopes to decide on a strategic solution for its Pakistan business before year-end, the company's CEO told Reuters on Wednesday. "We are in contact with many parties now, which is why I say I'm rather optimistic that we will by the end of the year have a final solution," CEO Sigve Brekke said. The three options are a merger similar to what Telenor has already done for other parts of its Asia businesses, a sale, or to continue but in a different operational model, he added. Phadke most recently headed Google Cloud's (GOOGL.O) telecom business and has previously worked for British Telecom, Alcatel-Lucent and Accenture's network services unit. He said he wanted Telenor "to use AI in all of our operations to make operations more efficient, develop new products, increase energy efficiency." Phadke said Telenor would use AI will to make business operations more efficient, for example to predict traffic demand and allocate more bandwidth to areas with more users, and to improve interactions with customers. "We do not believe that AI will directly result in job reductions," Phadke said, adding he envisaged using AI to augment and enhance, not substitute, humans in processes.

Norway has become Europe's largest supplier of gas, following a drop in Russian gas flows, which it supplies via a network of pipelines stretching some 9,000 kms (5,590 miles). "The state wants complete state ownership of the central parts of the Norwegian gas transport system," it said, without giving reasons. The gas pipeline network is owned by Gassled, a partnership set up in 2003 by the oil companies that were producing gas offshore Norway at the time. Gassled owns the Kaarstoe and Kollsnes processing plants as well as the majority of the pipelines delivering Norwegian gas to the European Union and Britain. Over time, the oil companies have reduced, or sold entirely their stakes, often selling to investment companies.
Google , Netflix , Meta , Apple , Amazon and Microsoft generate nearly half of all internet traffic today. Big Tech firms say this would amount to an "internet tax" that could undermine net neutrality. They bemoaned spending billions on laying cables and installing antennas to cope with rising internet demand without corresponding investments from Big Tech. One suggestion is to require individual bargaining deals with the Big Tech firms, similar to Australian licensing models between news publishers and internet platforms. "The imbalance is not down to Big Tech, it's not down to streamers, and it's not down to telcos.
"We have not completed the deployment of 5G yet," Ha Min Yong, chief development officer of SK Telecom , told CNBC last week. However, after hundreds of billions of dollars of investment into 5G networks, carriers have struggled to see the return. I don't see any use cases today that we can't do with 5G or its immediate evolutions," Watson told CNBC last week. Many of the current 5G networks are built on top of equipment and technology from 4G. There will also be more software that powers 5G networks helping with efficiency such as the management of data traffic.
Nestlé to close operations in Myanmar

CNN —Nestlé has announced that it will close its sole factory and head office in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, as it switches to a more “sustainable” business model amid ongoing turmoil in the country. Myanmar has been rocked by violence and instability since 2021 when a military coup ousted democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her government. “We will do all we can to support everyone affected by this decision,” a Nestlé spokesperson told CNN Tuesday in a statement. Total (TOT) started operating the offshore Yadana gas field in Myanmar in 1992, and was the biggest shareholder in the project. “Nestlé started distributing our products in Myanmar in 1991 and expanded our presence in the country,” the spokesperson said.

KARACHI, Pakistan, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Thousands of mobile phone towers have gone offline across Pakistan due to a nationwide power cut on Monday, an industry source told Reuters, raising the spectre of a telecommunications blackout in parts of the country of 220 million people. The disruption has begun hitting the country's approximately 40,000 telecommunication towers. Separately, the country's telecommunication regulator, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), warned of outages. "Due to country wide power outage, users may face service disruptions," PTA said in a statement. A spokesperson for PTA did not respond to a question on how many of Pakistan's telecommunication towers were offline.

REUTERS/Nir EliasSINGAPORE, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Israel's Cognyte Software Ltd (CGNT.O) won a tender to sell intercept spyware to a Myanmar state-backed telecommunications firm a month before the Asian nation's February 2021 military coup, according to documents reviewed by Reuters. Intercept spyware can give authorities the power to listen in on calls, view text messages and web traffic including emails, and track the locations of users without the assistance of telecom and internet firms. MPT uses intercept spyware, a source with direct knowledge of the matter and three people briefed on the issue told Reuters although they did not identify the vendor. Reuters was unable to determine whether the sale of Cognyte intercept technology to MPT was finalised. While intercept spyware is typically described as "dual-use" technology for civilian and defence purposes, Israeli law states that "dual-use" technology is classified as defence equipment.
Telenor to provide support for customers of former Myanmar unit

OSLO, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Norway's Telenor (TEL.OL) said on Friday it is exploring ways to provide support to Myanmar telecom users facing digital security risks after its exit from the Southeast Asian nation this year. Following a military coup in Myanmar in 2021, Telenor announced the sale of its business there to avoid European Union sanctions after pressure from the junta to activate intercept surveillance technology. Telenor completed the exit despite criticism from employees in Myanmar as well as from activists who said the handover could put the data of 18 million people within reach of the ruling military. "Following the completion of the independent digital risk study, Telenor has committed to support the implementation of the follow up actions recommended by it," the company said in a statement. Telenor Q3 gets surprise boost from one-off gain in Pakistan

Dented by soaring inflation and intense competition, the company's shares have lost 35% year-to-date, closing at a 10-year low on Tuesday. "However, the negative effects are, this quarter, countered by a reversal of SIM tax provision in Pakistan." The one-off gain could help Telenor meet its annual goal of unchanged profit versus last year, it said. The group maintained its investment forecast for the year, predicting capital expenditure would amount to 16-17% of sales, and reiterated that service revenue would see "low single-digit growth". "We see positive trends for mobile service revenue in the Nordic region, with a growth of 4% in the third quarter," Brekke said.
